Covalent Lithium Pty Ltd (Covalent) is the manager appointed by a joint venture between subsidiaries of Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) and Wesfarmers Limited to develop and operate the Mount Holland Lithium Project, which will be a unique, fully integrated producer of battery quality lithium hydroxide in Western Australia.
As the global demand for cleaner, battery-based energy storage systems and electric vehicles is on the rise, so too is the demand for the battery quality lithium hydroxide. In fact, in full production, Covalent will produce enough lithium hydroxide to enable approximately one million electric vehicles to replace regular vehicles on the road each year. This is a significant and exciting step towards a cleaner energy future.
Covalent’s refinery process to manufacture battery quality lithium hydroxide will also produce a lithium aluminosilicate product termed Delithiated Beta Spodumene (DBS) – a new and emerging class of manufactured pozzolan. Covalent is actively conducting industry relevant research and certification to establish commercial reuse options for DBS, including use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete, mortar and related applications and as a construction materials component.
