The Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has demonstrated an excellent commitment to sustainability by mandating the IS rating scheme for projects over $2 million. As part of the CBD Improvement Project, the Queen Elizabeth Park and Collett Street project achieved an Excellent As Built rating and is the first recreational park to be awarded an IS rating and the first small project to be certified under IS version 1.2

The project was officially opened by the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, in December, where Case Manager Kirsty Bauer highlighted the numerous sustainability outcomes achieved:

  • Reduction in energy by installing LEDs for park lighting and solar panels
  • Excellence in improving topsoil productivity through seeding stockpiles and pre-use enhancement
  • Water minimisation through gravel and sand reuse and concrete recycling
  • 100% diversion of inert non-hazardous waste from landfill through composting and recycling
  • Biodiversity was enhanced by decreasing hard standing surfaces and introduction of native vegetation.
