Sustainability Outcomes

Downer has partnered with Sutherland Shire Council and Close the Loop to set a new benchmark in sustainability and innovation, constructing the first road in New South Wales utilising Reconophalt™, an innovative asphalt product that contains a combination of soft plastics, toner, recycled asphalt and glass. Downer is proud to take a lead role in repurposing soft plastics and glass in asphalt for road construction to create a sustainable, cost effective solution that has improved performance characteristics over conventional asphalt.

The road constructed in Engadine with soft plastics, toner, recycled asphalt and glass in asphalt demonstrates the economic, social and environmental value for products that would likely end up in landfill, stockpiled, or as a pollutant in our natural environments. More importantly, utilising soft plastics, toner, recycled asphalt and glass in road construction proves that with thought leadership in sustainability and partnerships with progressive and environmentally conscious governments, suppliers and customers, we can continue to set new benchmarks in repurposing and recycling waste materials into new streams of use.

Reconophalt™ can support your project to achieve points in ISv1.2 Mat-1 and ISv2.0 Rso-6 by reducing the environmental impacts of your material footprint. In addition, Downer can work with your project to achieve ISv2.0 Spr-2 L3.1 and Spr-3 L3.3 though collaborating with you to create innovative solutions as we did with Sutherland Shire Council.

DEMONSTRATION SNAPSHOT
The road constructed in Engadine with 220 tonnes of asphalt has a greater than 35% total recycled material content with approximately:
-176,000 plastic bag and packaging equivalents
-55,440 glass bottle equivalents
-Toner from 3,960 used printer cartridges
-66 tonnes reclaimed road (asphalt)
