Description

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport, Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works (SBT) forms part of the broader Sydney Metro network.

The SBT scope includes:

  • The design and construction of two sections of twin tunnels with a combined length of approximately 9.8 kilometres
  • Associated portal structures, station boxes, services shafts, temporary ground support, cross passages, and stub tunnels.

Rating Highlights

Category  Credits  Achievements
Energy and Carbon  Ene-1  The Project achieved a verified level of 3 with a score of 13.09.

The Project demonstrated a commitment to offset 100% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions in construction. Additionally, the purchase and retirement of 43,812 ACCUs demonstrate a 36% reduction in overall GHG emissions. Through procurement of Hybrid vehicles, the project observed 33% reduction in Fuel consumption. Procurement of EPB TBMs with Continuous Mode Earth Pressure Balance reduced ring – building cycle time by 26%, accelerating tunnelling activities.

Climate Change Adaptation  Cli-1/Cli-2  The Project achieved a verified level of 3

The SBT Works adaption measures reduced all climate change risks to at least a low-risk rating. SBT has no extreme and/or high priority climate change risks.

Some of the noteworthy initiatives:

  • Collaborated Penrith City Council and WSA Co to address potential flooding impacts.
  • Integrated long-term durability and drainage considerations in the design of the bridge.
  • Ensured follow-on contractors and operators are informed and aligned with climate change risk treatment strategies.
  • Maintained consistent climate change risk management across different project phases and packages.

Inn-1.01 – Glass fibre reinforced rock bolts  27/02/2024                                                             Innovative Technology or Process – State First (NSW) awarded as piggyback  The Project received 1point for a State First innovation as piggyback on another project previously verified.

Glass-fibre-reinforced rock bolts reduce life cycle assessment-based (LCA) emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional steel rock bolts.

Inn-1.12 – GuardDog drain filters  27/02/2024  Innovative Technology or Process

Australian First (awarded as piggyback)

The Project received 3 points for an Australia First innovation awarded as piggyback on a project previously verified.

Stratex’s GuardDog drain filter is made of recycled materials and used to trap sediment and hydrocarbons from entering stormwater drains. It is more durable than traditional erosion and sediment control products and is effective even in high flow situations.

Inn-1.08 – Contamination management  27/02/2024  Innovative Technology or Process

State First (NSW)

The Project received 1 point for a State First (NSW) innovation.

Activated carbon injected into the ground to create a permeable reactive barrier to prevent chlorinated hydrocarbons from migrating towards the St Marys station box asset.
