- Green electricity procurement: All offices were powered by green electricity where available, and offsets were purchased for those not serviced by a green provider.
- Construction initiatives: These included the use of biofuels and solar-powered lighting towers, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- Operational initiatives: Energy-efficient measures such as LED lighting and Sydney Trains have been using 100% renewable electricity to power its operations since 1 July 2021, and is committed to achieving net zero emissions operations by 2035.
- Innovation in cable installation: The introduction of the davit arm significantly improved productivity while reducing fuel consumption.

Her-1 and Her-2 |
Project demonstrated a strong commitment to heritage protection and enhancement, achieving a Level 3 rating under the ISC Her-1 and Her-2 credits. This reflects the highest standard of heritage management across planning, construction, and interpretation. Key initiatives included:
- Continuous SQP Oversight: Suitably Qualified Professionals (SQPs), including archaeologists and heritage consultants, were involved throughout the project lifecycle. Their oversight ensured that excavation and construction activities were conducted with minimal impact to heritage items.
- Archaeological Monitoring & Protection: Extensive archaeological monitoring was undertaken across all sites, with protocols in place for unexpected finds. Heritage values were preserved through site-specific controls, vibration monitoring, and exclusion zones.
- Heritage Interpretation & Community Engagement:
- Community posters and fact sheets were displayed and published to raise awareness of local heritage.
- A heritage tour of Mortuary Station was organised for project staff, with a video shared publicly.
- The Tunnel Boring Machine was named “Aunty Recheal” in honour of NSW’s first female Indigenous train driver, celebrating cultural heritage.
- Adaptive Reuse: Historical materials, such as 19th-century bricks, were reused in construction, demonstrating thoughtful integration of heritage into modern infrastructure.
These efforts not only protected heritage assets but also enhanced public understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural history embedded in our rail corridors. |

Project achieved Level 3 ISC rating for noise management, demonstrating best-practice performance across both construction and operational phases. Below Is the highlights:
Construction Phase
- Comprehensive Planning: Noise and vibration assessments were conducted for all sites, identifying sensitive receivers and setting site-specific noise goals.
- Mitigation Measures: Implemented controls included:
- Echo barriers and noise blankets at high-impact sites like Wolli Creek and Erskineville.
- Silencers and mufflers on mobile plant.
- Scheduled respite periods and alternate accommodation offers for affected residents.
- Monitoring & Responsiveness: Noise was monitored regularly and in response to complaints. All complaints were addressed with verification monitoring, confirming compliance with predicted limits.
Operational Phase
- Modelling Outcomes: Operational noise modelling across all sites confirmed that predicted noise levels remain below trigger thresholds.
- Design Enhancements: At Wolli Creek, acoustic walls were upgraded from precast to in-situ reinforced concrete to further reduce noise. At Mascot, final equipment selections validated earlier modelling, and additional shielding was introduced via architectural screens.
Compliance & Verification
- The project followed the TfNSW Construction Noise and Vibration Strategy (CNVS), aligned with ISCA-approved guidelines. Monitoring data showed no exceedances attributable to project activities, and no noise-related environmental incidents were recorded.

The Davit Arm and Guide Roller Combination is a portable, adjustable mechanical device designed to assist in the installation of heavy cables (telecommunication, signalling, and power) in hard-to-reach locations such as railway tunnels. It:
- Guides and supports cables as they unspool from a drum.
- Reduces manual handling and the need for multiple plant items.
- Mounts within the basket of a hi-rail Elevated Work Platform (EWP) using ratchet straps.
- Offers height and depth adjustability, 360° roller rotation, and interchangeable roller options.
Sustainability Benefits of this device are:
- Eliminated the need for 3 hi-rail excavators over 336 hours of possession time.
- Saved over 8,500L of diesel and 25,000kg CO₂e, representing a 21.5% reduction in fuel and emissions.
- Enabled faster maintenance and fewer network disruptions.
