About

Mapedrill FR 10 is a stabiliser liquid polymer which can be used in many applications in mechanised tunnelling with TBMs, in injection and in drilling.

Mapedrill FR 10 is very versatile and can have different properties depending on the application demanded and the dosage applied.

Mechanised tunnelling with shield TBMs
Mapedrill FR 10 can be added to the backfill grout (cementitious mortar, two-component grout, etc.) at the batching plant as one of the mix-design ingredients to provide the following advantages:
· enhance grout anti wash-out properties;
· improve the grout stability (“bleeding” reduction).

Furthermore, Mapedrill FR 10 can totally or partially replace the use of bentonite in the backfill grout in the cases where the use of bentonite is prohibited for environmental issues, it is not possible for logistic reasons or the bentonite available in the jobsite is not optimal for the specific application.
Finally, Mapedrill FR 10 improves the grout stability when contaminated waters (i.e. pH > 12) are used to produce the grout.

Injection technology
Mapedrill FR 10 can be added to cementitious injection grout to improve the volumetric grout stability (reducing bleeding) without affecting the other properties as setting time, viscosity, etc.
Mapedrill FR 10 can also provide a very important reduction of the fluid loss from cementitious and bentonite-based grouts, minimising the separation between solid particles and water which can occur under high injection pressure.

Bentonite-based slurry for slurry TBMs and drilling
Mapedrill FR 10 can enhance the properties of a bentonite-based slurry reducing the filter loss without affecting the rheological properties of the slurry.

Sustainability Outcomes

MAPEDRILL FR10 supports sustainable tunnelling practices by enabling the use of recycled water in backfill grout production without compromising technical performance. This innovation directly addresses key environmental challenges associated with mechanised tunnelling, particularly reducing reliance on potable water—a critical resource in many infrastructure projects.

In tunnelling operations, backfill grout is typically water-based, and its performance is highly dependent on water quality. When untreated recycled water with high pH or chemical impurities is used, it can cause excessive bleeding, segregation, and viscosity loss in the grout. This can lead to operational inefficiencies such as increased material usage, higher carbon emissions, and extended downtime.

MAPEDRILL FR10 mitigates these risks by stabilising the grout mix, even in the presence of highly alkaline recycled water (e.g., pH > 13). It ensures consistent rheological performance, reduces bleeding, and minimises grout segregation. This allows for the use of on-site treated or reclaimed water sources in line with sustainability targets, reducing the demand for freshwater and associated environmental impacts.

By improving grout performance under less-than-ideal water conditions, MAPEDRILL FR10 contributes to:

Lower embodied carbon by reducing wasted grout volumes and rework;

Resource efficiency through the reuse of water and reduction in overall grout consumption;

Improved operational sustainability, ensuring reduced downtime and fewer material blockages in pumping systems.
