The Canning Bridge Interchange (CBI) project is a bus-to-train transfer facility, located eight kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District (CBD). The CBI is located directly east of Canning Bridge on Canning Highway, at the interchange between Canning Highway and Kwinana Freeway. The bus station on Canning Highway Bridge is located directly above the rail station.
As part of the 2002 Master Plan planning for the Mandurah Railway Line, the CBI was projected to function only as a minor interchange. However, the number of average daily boardings (ADB) has far exceeded expectations and the CBI is forecast to become capacity-constrained in the long term. The CBI now plays an integral part within the Perth metropolitan transport network with the exist facilities unable to meet future demand.
To address this, a dedicated over Freeway bus depot facility is to be constructed, which includes associated station upgrade work to accommodate vertical transport. The solution is required to create direct pedestrian access between the bus interchange and train station. Underpasses have been provided into the station to create a safer grade separated environment for pedestrians. Train replacement bus links are to be maintained with the new facility.
In addition to the bus facility, provision of separate shared path south of Canning Bridge to provide better cycling access across the Kwinana Freeway and providing passenger access to the southern sections of the rail platforms is included in the project. As well as reconstruction of the existing
