Four Infrastructure Projects Achieved Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating

Four infrastructure projects in Australia were awarded their Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating at the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia Gala Dinner on Thursday in Sydney.

These four projects include:

• Enlarged Cotter Dam (ACT) achieved Commended As Built IS Rating
• Whitsunday Sewage Treatment Plants Upgrade (QLD) achieved Excellent As Built IS Rating
• Googong Water Treatment Plant Chemical Facility Upgrade Plant (ACT) achieved Commended Design IS Rating
• North West Rail Link Early Works (NSW) achieved Commended As Built IS Rating

"Congratulations to these projects for achieving their certified IS ratings and the outcomes that benefit not just the environment, but the communities and economies they serve," Antony Sprigg.

At the Dinner, the Assistant Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Hon. Jamie Briggs, congratulated the acknowledged the importance of the tool in the future of infrastructure.

"I'm sure there will be many more seeking your endorsement as the tool grows in its reputation and the role it will play in the future of infrastructure across Australia," Jamie Briggs said in his keynote address.

The IS Rating scheme is a world leading tool developed in Australia that serves as a triple bottom line (social, economic and environment) performance measurement system and decision-support framework.

"Sustainability is often linked to the environment and perceived to be associated with unnecessary costs. Whereas, in reality sustainability is about performance across the full triple bottom line. What we have seen in infrastructure projects that have gone through the IS Rating certification, is that real cost savings can be derived from the process," Antony said.

"There is a significant investment that is being allocated for infrastructure and we are pleased to see that many of the associated project proponents are using the IS Rating scheme. We look forward to continuing our engagement across industry to collectively inform, test and update the business case," Antony added.

Also announced at the event were the winners of the inaugural Sustainability in Infrastructure Awards.
