Overview

Waka Kotahi are pursuing an IS Rating in accordance with their Sustainability Rating Scheme Policy, Toitū Te Taiao - Our Sustainability Action Plan, Te Ara Kotahi - Our Māori Strategy, Te Hiringa O Te Taiao: Our Resource Efficiency Strategy, and other relevant initiatives. Waka Kotahi are committed to producing sustainable outcomes on their projects and this is an opportunity to show tangible results. It also provides an opportunity to create a step change and set new industry standards as per NZ Upgrade Program (NZUP) Step Change Initiatives.

The Papakura to Drury (P2D) project is a Waka Kotahi project to improve the safety and functionality of SH1 and provide for long term growth in the south of Auckland. The P2D project aims to improve accessibility along the Southern Motorway portion of SH1 for all road users, cyclists and pedestrians.
The geographic location of the P2D project is between the Papakura Interchange to south of the Drury Interchange (Quarry Road). Waka Kotahi separated the P2D project into different stages. The stages referred to in this form is Stage 1B1 and Stage 1B2.

A brief description of the Stage 1B1 works are as follows:

 Papakura Interchange:
- Modifications to the northbound on and off ramps;
 Shared use path (SUP) on the western side of SH1 from Papakura Interchange to north of Otūwairoa Stream and from Bremner Road to just south of Drury Interchange;
 Construction of footbridges to accommodate the SUP;

 Drury Interchange:
- Relocation of the existing full diamond Interchange eastwards;
- A third lane on SH1 northbound and southbound from south of Bremner Road to north of Quarry Road;
- Enhancements to the motorway alignment and cross section including widened shoulders and a new median barrier;
 Replacement of SH1 bridge over Great South Road;
 Replacement of Bremner Road Bridge over SH1;
 Replacement of Jesmond Bridge over Ngakoroa Stream; and
 Construction of stormwater management devices consisting of ponds, swales and proprietary devices.

A brief description of the Stage 1B2 works are as follows:
 A third lane on SH1 northbound and southbound from south of the BP Service Centre to north of Bremner Road;
 Enhancements to the motorway alignment and cross section including widened shoulders and a new median barrier;
 Replacement and raising of Otūwairoa (Slippery Creek) Bridges over Otūwairoa Stream, including retaining walls and upgrades to the north and southbound approaches;
 SUP on the western side of SH1 on the approaches to and across Otūwairoa Stream;
 SUP connections to Great Southern Road north of Otūwairoa Stream;
 Construction of stormwater management devices.
